So Gay So What

I remember watching the Indianapolis 500 years back (2005), when Danica Patrick was still kind of a rookie. On that day, she took the lead in the race near the end and everybody was on their feet to watch the first woman to lead a Indy race in history. What a rush of adrenaline! She ended up finishing in fourth, but nobody ever forgot to watch out for her on the tracks!

Finally, this Sunday, with only 3 laps to go, Danica took the lead and won Indy Japan 300, making history being the first woman to win an Indycar race.

The thing is, it doesn’t really matter if you are into car races or not (I am totally into that having been in one in my home country), seeing a woman’s victory for the first time in a sport that the only thing you see around is men, men, men and more men, is a big deal. You can notice that by reading some commentaries in the press today and by the way the ESPN narrated her victory:

It’s always a good day when you get to see a woman with guts, looking sexy and holding the biggest trophy on the highest place on the podium. I can’t complain.

Besides, Danica featured in a Honda Civic Coupe commercial years ago. For some reason, that video keeps coming back to my mind. ;-) The link was no where to be found (anyone?), but I can tell you what I remember:

Danica is driving a red model of the 2006 Civic Coupe; it shows her speeding down a really curvy road and saying on the phone “yeah I will be there in like 5 minutes”. Then she is pulled over by the motorcycle cop and before the offices approaches, she open her blouse to show some cleavage and says “It’s show time”. She rolls down her window and turns to smile at the cop. The cop takes of the sunglasses and it is a woman! She walks away with DP’s license and insurance saying “rookie”.

Interesting is that I drive that same car. Thanks Honda Danica.

This year, Danica featured in Sports Illustrated swimsuit catalog and the pictures are all over the internet. Recently, she was voted sexiest athlete in Victoria’s Secret “What is Sexy” list.

Today, Air Train is putting Danica’s picture (not wearing swimsuit, unfort) on a plane on two flights cross country.

Caring or not about her lesbian followers, she is a good role model for women that compete professionally with men in sports. More power to her!
